INVIVO 21-Day Fitness Challenge: Isometrics

Are you ready for a Challenge?

Join INVIVO’s FREE 21-Day Fitness Challenge. This month our Challenge is Isometrics.

Each month we will feature a new challenge targeting specific movement skills that will help make you stronger and fitter to handle the physical challenges of your daily life.

June 2 – 22: Isometrics

Isometric training is when you contract a muscle or group of muscles without moving a joint or change the length of the muscle. Your muscle fibers are “firing” or increasing tension while holding a somewhat challenging body position.

Isometrics or static exercises help maintain strength, enhance stabilization, and can be done anywhere without equipment. Isometrics are useful to add into your training for activities that require static strength – your posture, climbing, skiing, mountain biking (grip strength) and horseback riding.

Isometric exercises are used in pre-hab and rehab by physical therapists to help improve the function and strength of your muscles. Isometric training may also be helpful to someone who has arthritis, which could be aggravated by using muscles to move a joint through the full range of motion. And, studies have shown that isometric exercises may also help lower blood pressure when done consistently.

NOTE: People with cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure should consult a doctor before starting isometric exercises because your blood pressure can rise while you’re holding these static positions.

When performing isometrics, it’s essential to breathe slowly and deeply and avoid holding your breath.

Making healthy choices is easier with the support of others. Encourage a friend to join the INVIVO 21-Day Fitness Challenge too!
